Omsorgstandplejen is a municipal system, where the municipalities are obligated by law to offer preventive and therapeutic dental care for adult persons who because of their health only difficult to make use of the common established tandplejetilbud. Municipalities may charge a fee for the scheme, and in 2009 this fee is around 400 dollars annually, according to the rate at which the individual municipality has chosen to use.

Eligibility for omsorgstandpleje
Omsorgstandplejen is for persons over 18 years of age, who, because of chronic reduced mobility and severe physical or mental disability will have difficulties to use the established tandplejesystem.

The primary audience for omsorgstandplejen is originally defined as persons who either live in nursing homes, or in their own home/ældrebolig or similar with many remedial measures, if the self-reliant capacity and self-care is so limited that they need help in the general day to day functions or really care, and can effectively be equated with nursing home residents.

Thus, it is not the idea that a wider group of frail elderly or disabled people who may otherwise be treated on ordinary disability-friendly clinics must be covered by omsorgstandplejetilbudet. Omsorgstandplejen is not directed against persons, which, in principle, can make use of the existing tandplejetilbud, but who, for social or other reasons, has opted out of this. The majority of the omsorgstandplejens group of people already live in ældrebolig / nursing home and receive old-age pension.
